Located in Frangoneiro, on the outskirts of Portalegre, in the lands of Alto Alentejo, is Tapada do Chaves, a property that gives rise to wines of recognized quality for almost 100 years.
With 60 hectares of land and 32 of wine-growing heritage, 23 of which are of red grape varieties and nine hectares of white grape varieties, Tapada do Chaves is located in an area strongly influenced by orography (Serra de São Mamede) and the coverage agroforestry that gives it a specific and decisive microclimate for the quality and typicality of the wines produced there.
Alentejo wine estates are rare and have accumulated over a century of existence. Tapada do Chaves is, therefore, a unique case in the Alentejo panorama. It is a particular place, unique for its heritage, for its orography. Located on a granite massif and with a generous altitude that allows the slow and full ripening of the grapes, which is reflected in very pure aromas in the wines and a unique freshness in the reds and whites.
Its history goes back to the beginning of the 20th century when, in Frangoneiro, Senhor Chaves planted the first vineyards in his small property (Tapada), starting a relationship of passion and dedication to the land.
In Tapada do Chaves are two of the oldest vineyard plots in Alentejo, in production, registered in the past years of 1901 (old red vine) and 1903 (old white vine).
Right from the beginning of its history, Tapada do Chaves was distinguished by an enviable list of awards and distinctions that can still be seen today in the different rooms that make up the historic cellar of this property.
Having a Tapada do Chaves on the table or in the basement quickly started to mean having the best that the Alentejo could give. These famous wines glorified good freshness without prejudice to a generous and velvety body. The longevity of these wines, especially the red ones, is also one of their glories.
